There can be various routes of transmission of the virus from the mother to baby. They can include through the placenta, or at the time of delivery or through breast milk. However, there have been only a couple of cases that I know of to date, where the virus was transmitted through the breast milk, said Dr Teji Dawane, Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Manipal Hospitals Whitefield. “The risk a covid-19 positive mother carries are the general risks faced by others when they get the infection. Additionally, if the mother goes into labour when she’s having respiratory complications due to the infection, there may be certain risks. Otherwise, there is no mentionable risk, said Dr Gayatri Karthik Nagesh, Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology , Manipal Hospitals Old Airport Road.
