Deformity correction in Bangalore | Manipal Hospitals

Deformity correction is a surgical procedure to straighten the bones that are twisted, bent, or formed abnormally due to certain disease conditions.

There are various methods to correct the deformities like:

  • Ilizarov

  • Club foot correction

  • Lengthening of muscles in cerebral palsy and poliomyelitis

Ilizarov

Ilizarov is an advanced medical technique used to lengthen or straighten soft and bone tissue. This technique has saved many people from limb amputation. This process works on the principle that the bone heals itself by growing or regeneration.

An Ilizarov frame is a ring-like brace applied to the outside of the limb and connected through the unbroken part of the bone inside the limb using wires and pins. These wires and pins are attached to metal rods on the outside frame to provide bone stability.

Club foot correction

Club foot correction is a birth deformity caused during the birth of a child. The legs of the child will be facing inwards hindering the movements of a child from one place to another. This deformity can be corrected through reconstructive surgeries. During the procedure, the multiple soft tissues are removed and the leg is stabilised with pins and a leg cast while the soft tissue heals. After six weeks the cast is replaced and maintained for another four weeks. After the last cast is removed child is made to wear shoes or braces to avoid relapsing of the club foot.

Cerebral Palsy and Poliomyelitis

Cerebral palsy is a disorder that affects movement, muscle tone, or posture. It is due to damage to the immature development of the brain before birth. This condition is associated with involuntary movements, unusual posture, walking, and spasticity of the limbs. Surgical lengthening of the muscles relieves tightness in the hands and fingers. This surgical method of lengthening the muscles is also used to treat poliomyelitis.
