Microbiology Hospital in Bangalore

The study of all living organisms that are too small to see with the naked eye is known as microbiology. They include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, archaea, fungi, and algae. Some of these microbes are helpful for humans while some are responsible for causing deadly diseases such as malaria or COVID-19. Microbiologists are specialists who study the causes, prevention and treatment of various infections caused due to these microscopic organisms. At Manipal Hospitals, we have an expert team of microbiologists who have years of experience in treating various diseases caused due to these tiny creatures.

The body's immune system can combat some infections, but antimicrobial medications are used to treat more severe illnesses. Antibacterials, often known as antibiotics, are used to treat bacterial infections whereas antifungals and antivirals are used to treat fungal and viral infections, respectively. Antiparasitics, a large class of medications, are used to treat parasitic illnesses.

The Department of Microbiology at Manipal Hospitals is one of the most well-equipped facilities in India for the prevention and treatment of a wide gamut of infectious diseases caused by microbes. Our expert microbiologists devise the best course of action based on the type of microbe, its antibiotic resistance, the infection site, the potential toxicity of the antimicrobials, and any drug sensitivities the patient may have. Our doctors are adept at completely treating many diseases and conditions including:

  • Tuberculosis (TB)

Tuberculosis is a type of lung infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB is a communicable disease and the bacterium that causes TB spreads from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes. The signs and symptoms of active TB are coughing for three or more weeks, coughing up blood or mucus, chest pain, fatigue, night sweats, chills, and loss of appetite.

The most common diagnostic tool for TB is a skin test, in which a small amount of a substance called tuberculin is injected just below the skin on the inside of your forearm. After 2-3 days, the doctor checks the arm of the patient for swelling at the injection site. A hard and raised red bump indicates the presence of TB infection. Tuberculosis can be treated completely. The most common treatment method is antibiotic medication.

  • Malaria

Malaria is a deadly disease caused by the Plasmodium parasites. It is spread through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito. Common symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, rapid breathing, nausea and vomiting, and cough. Malaria can be diagnosed with the help of a blood test. It can be treated by administering antimalarial drugs such as Chloroquine phosphate and Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs).

  • Rubella (German measles)

Rubella, popularly known as German measles is a viral infection that may cause mild or no symptoms in some people. It is characterised by its distinctive red rash. Symptoms of Rubella are clearly noticeable and include mild fever, headache, red & itchy eyes, and stuffy and runny nose. The Rubella infection can be confirmed with lab tests. Since the symptoms are mild, the infection does not require special treatment. Doctors usually recommend isolation from others.

  • Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is characterised by an itchy, circular rash with clearer skin in the middle. Common symptoms include itchiness, slightly raised expanding rings, and a clear or scaly area inside the ring. It is caused by a common mould-like parasite and spreads through human-to-human or animal-to-animal. Ringworm can also spread through contaminated objects or soil. Ringworm can be treated by over-the-counter medications. If that doesn’t work, doctors might prescribe antifungal pills.

  • Athlete's foot

It’s a fungal infection that generally occurs between toes. The most common cause of an Athlete’s foot is sweaty feet caused due to tight shoes. Its symptoms are itchy and scaly rash. This infection is contagious and can spread via contaminated floors, towels, or clothing. Similar to ringworms, Athlete’s feet can be treated by antifungal medications.
