Supraglottoplasty

Supraglottoplasty is a procedure used to treat laryngomalacia (soft larynx). This condition causes floppy tissue on top of the larynx, to fall into the airway and obstruct the breathing of the child leading to noisy breathing. This abnormality may cause difficulty in feeding, breathing, and swallowing.

What happens during Supraglottoplasty?

The surgery is done through the mouth using a small instrument. The excess floppy tissue around the larynx is removed carefully without making an incision. The complete procedure may take around one hour and the child may need a temporary breathing tube the night after the procedure. There will be some degree of swelling and pain post-surgery, which may cause feeding problems in your child for a few weeks.

What are the risks involved in Supraglottoplasty?

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Damaged to the surrounding area

Tracheal resection & Anastomosis

Tracheal resection and anastomosis is a procedure for tracheal tumour and stenosis (narrowing of the windpipe). During the procedure parts of the windpipe are removed. The tumours or the narrowed parts of the windpipe are removed to make breathing easier.

How to prepare for tracheal resection and anastomosis?

  • Inform the doctor about all the ongoing medications and herbal supplements.

  • Inform the doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorder.

  • Do not eat anything after midnight if the person is undergoing the procedure the next day.

What to expect after the tracheal resection and anastomosis surgery?

  • After the surgery, the person will be taken to the cardiothoracic intensive unit for 5 to 7 days until the airways heal.

  • Urine catheters and drainage tubes are removed after 24 to 72 hours.
