Revision Bariatric Surgery

This procedure is usually recommended for repairing or altering a previously performed unsuccessful weight-loss surgery. Over the last few years, this procedure has become popular mainly due to the unsatisfactory outcomes – chronic diarrhoea, malabsorption of nutrients, weight gain, and uncontrolled and excessive weight loss – of a previously performed weight-reduction surgery.

Revision surgery is generally planned to depend on the type of operation that has been previously performed. For example, the expansion and slipping off of an adjustable silicone ring, which might have been placed around the patient’s stomach during a laparoscopic gastric banding for reducing the intake of food, may feel the need for a sleeve gastrectomy which involves the removal of a part of the stomach or a gastric bypass where the stomach is bifurcated and the smaller bifurcation is attached to the intestine.

Revision procedures are usually laparoscopic-assisted so that the surgeon gets a clearer and magnified view of the patient’s stomach. Moreover, laparoscopy leads to less scarring which enables faster patient recovery and reduces the need for long hospitalization periods.

Post a revision surgery, the patient will regain their walking strength either on the same day or after one day. The patient can resume work after 1 week and see noticeable weight-related changes within two weeks. However, the patient must exercise regularly and follow a healthy lifestyle after fully recovering.
