Mini Gastric Bypass

This procedure is also called one anastomosis gastric bypass and combines gastric sleeve and standard gastric bypass procedures. This procedure is recommended for people with a BMI of 30 and diagnosed with obesity-associated health disorders and BMI greater than 35 along with or without obesity-associated health conditions, such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnoea and heart diseases.

General anaesthesia is administered at the beginning of the procedure, which is then followed by various tiny incisions on the abdomen. This is followed by the insertion of a laparoscope, which is a thin tube consisting of a camera and torch at the end and some small devices, via the incisions to provide a more magnified and clearer view of the stomach. The size of the patient’s upper stomach is then reduced so that it looks like a narrow tube or a sleeve and can hold a small amount of food. The opening of the stomach is then attached to the intestine’s loop which allows food to bypass the lower stomach and duodenum (a part of the small intestine, also known as an omega loop). The procedure generally takes around one hour, following which, the incisions are closed.

Benefits of Mini Gastric Bypass

  • It is completely reversible

  • Mitigates the risk of obesity-associated disorders

  • Reduces hunger pangs

  • Helps the patient feel satiated even after consuming small amounts of food
