Kidney stones are typically caused by an accumulation of minerals and other elements in the urine, which deposit in the kidney to form a stone. These kidney stones cause pain as they pass down the tube in the ureters, connecting the kidney with the bladder. Kidney stones have been found to be common in both adults and children. The early age group, mainly children and teens, is at high risk of developing kidney stones. It occurs in children of any age; even premature infants are at risk of developing kidney stones. The majority of kidney stones also occur in adolescents. Kidney stones majorly affect children in their adolescent phase and are found to be more common in girls when compared with boys. The persistence of chronic medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, seizure disorders, and urinary tract abnormalities among teens is associated with a higher risk of kidney stones. To know more about kidney stones treatment, visit our nephrology hospital in Vijayawada.

Some of the children will not have any symptoms and a stone is discovered during the diagnosis of urinary tract infection or any x-ray evaluation. The kidney stone diagnosis usually takes place by evaluating the child’s detailed history regarding the child’s intake during the day and how much he or she drinks, their medication or supplements, and information regarding their family history of kidney stones.

The appropriate treatment helps the body pass the kidney stone out of the urinary tract. It helps in controlling pain and helps the child with the intake of additional amounts of water or fluid. Children who have already suffered from kidney stones are prone to the risk of having another kidney stone in the future known as recurrence. The risk of developing kidney stones again is estimated between 16% and 44% in children who have already been diagnosed with kidney stones. Hence, it is important to prevent the risk of kidney stones and include the changing pattern of the child’s intake. To know all the risk factors, consult with our nephrologist in Vijayawada.

According to recent studies, kidney stones are occurring more frequently in young women, mainly those belonging to the age group of 18–39 years of age. The risk of developing kidney stones among middle-aged people occurs due to improper diet and the increasing rate of obesity. Decreased physical activity and environmental risks are other risk factors for the increasing cases of kidney stones among adults.

Female adolescents have been diagnosed with the highest rate of increase in kidney stone cases. Girls are more prone to the risk of developing kidney stones between the age group of 10–24 years of age when compared with boys. Also, men have been diagnosed to have a higher risk of developing kidney stones after the age of 25.

Preventing kidney stones

Several steps are taken to help people of all age groups reduce the chances of developing kidney stones. Some of the preventive measures include:

  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day so that the colour of urine should look like pale yellow.

  • Limiting salt intake in the diet is important as high sodium intake increases the chances of developing kidney stones.

  • Consumption of more fruits and vegetables, mainly through the intake of citrus fruits.

  • Limiting the consumption of fewer meats, processed foods, fast foods, and sodas.

  • Avoiding high fructose corn syrup-containing foods and beverages

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight.

  • Consumption of calcium-rich foods as per the doctor’s recommendation.
