While caring for an individual with memory problems can be difficult, realizing that a person himself/herself is beginning to show the signs of memory loss or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be even more stressful. This can lead to denial, in the initial stages, and then extreme stress as MCI is considered to be a precursor to dementia. MCI refers to regression in cognition which includes the memory and the ability of a person to comprehend the surrounding environment. In simple words, a gradual change in not just the memory but also visuospatial perception, language, and the ability to write and calculate. While MCI can be an ambiguous condition, there are various symptoms to look for to diagnose the condition.

These symptoms are:

  • Depression

  • Confusion

  • Difficulty communicating complete thoughts

  • Difficulty forming short-term memories

  • Forgetfulness

  • Easily distracted

  • Mental fog

  • Inability to concentrate

As these symptoms can severely affect a person’s functional ability, including their ability to do simple tasks, such as buying groceries, driving and managing personal finances, it is important to learn to cope with them.

5 Ways to Cope With MCI

  • Develop a list and follow it regularly: The Alzheimer’s Association recommends making a list of tasks that may be more challenging to remember, such as taking medications and other daily activities.

  • Set realistic goals: As the symptoms of MCI can be frustrating, it is essential to set realistic goals and stick to established plans. Moreover, doctors say that it is better to break down complicated tasks and not stress too much about the things that were doable before but now seem difficult to complete.

  • Always ask for help: As the symptoms of MCI become more severe, it becomes very difficult to remember simple tasks, conversations, names and other things. In such cases, asking for help is always the best way to manage things. As per doctors, the person with MCI should always be willing to accept input/help from a friend or family member to perform activities.

  • Develop a regular routine: Having a regular routine not only helps the person with MCI minimize memory problems but also assists them in performing routine activities successfully.

  • Exercise Regularly: Regular exercise has been found to improve brain function and cognitive health. Moreover, regular exercise will also help the person develop a proper routine.

  • Join memory support groups: Joining memory support groups can help the person form strong bonds and socialize with other people suffering from MCI.

Last but not the least, it’s important to get a detailed evaluation done to check for any reversible etiological factors like medication side effects, sleep deprivation, mood disorder or any vitamin deficiency as they can also lead to MCI.

Discuss your problem with the psychiatrist in Mangalore or visit the best psychiatric clinic in Mangalore near you if you feel you have the symptoms of dementia.

Unlike other health conditions, MCI cannot be completely cured or reversed. However, by following the above-mentioned tips, a person with MCI can cope with the disorder better, mitigate the symptoms considerably, and live a fulfilling life.
