Overview:

Hydrogen Breath Test is usually performed to detect small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and also glucose / lactose malabsorption

Pre Procedure:

Avoid the following:
Fibre supplements - 24 hours before the test.
Antibiotics and antacids - 4 weeks before the test.
Prokinetics and anti-mobility motility drugs - 1 week before the test.
The test is performed on an empty stomach, so you must be fasting for 12 hours or overnight.
Inform the doctor if you are diabetic.

During Procedure:

This is a painless, non-invasive procedure that usually takes about 2 hours.
You are settled comfortably in an area where your privacy is respected throughout the procedure. You will be given a hospital gown to change into.
The test is performed in a sitting position.
Glucose water is given to you before the test. If you are diabetic, the amount of glucose to be consumed will be lesser in quantity.
The test is performed with a small equipment called a Gastrolyser.
A disposable tube is attached to the Gastrolyser and you are asked to breathe into it every 15 mins for 2 hours.

Post Procedure:

Post the procedure, reports will be issued after an hour.
There are no dietary restrictions after the procedure and you may resume normal activities.
