Hydrogen Breath Test

Overview:

  • Hydrogen Breath Test is usually performed to detect small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and also glucose / lactose malabsorption 

 

Pre Procedure:

  • Avoid the following:

  • Fibre supplements - 24 hours before the test.

  • Antibiotics and antacids - 4 weeks before the test.

  • Prokinetics and anti-mobility motility drugs - 1 week before the test.

  • The test is performed on an empty stomach, so you must be fasting for 12 hours or overnight.

  • Inform the doctor if you are diabetic.

 

During Procedure:

  • This is a painless, non-invasive procedure that usually takes about 2 hours.

  • You are settled comfortably in an area where your privacy is respected throughout the procedure. You will be given a hospital gown to change into.

  • The test is performed in a sitting position.

  • Glucose water is given to you before the test. If you are diabetic, the amount of glucose to be consumed will be lesser in quantity.

  • The test is performed with a small equipment called a Gastrolyser.

  • A disposable tube is attached to the Gastrolyser and you are asked to breathe into it every 15 mins for 2 hours.

 

Post Procedure:

  • Post the procedure, reports will be issued after an hour.

  • There are no dietary restrictions after the procedure and you may resume normal activities.
