Uroflowmetry Testing Centres in Delhi

Uroflowmetry uses a special instrument to evaluate if the urine flow is normal or obstructed. This is a diagnostic screening procedure, where the person is directed to pass urine into a funnel attached to a measuring instrument. This instrument measures the volume of the urine, time is taken to empty the bladder and rate of flow of urine in seconds. This information along with the person’s age and gender will help a urologist to diagnose problems with the urinary tract.  Normally, while urinating, the urine starts to flow, starts slowly, but almost immediately picks up speed then slows down again until the bladder is empty.  But In the case of a urinary tract obstruction, the flow of the urine stream increases and decreases very slowly. A decrease in the urine flow may indicate weak bladder muscles or a blocked urethra. An increase in the urine flow may indicate urinary incontinence or weakness in the bladder muscles that control the urine flow. Other reasons why this procedure is used are:

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) or prostate enlargement.

  • Tumour growth in the bladder or the prostate

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Obstruction of the urinary tract

  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction due to changes in the nervous system, spinal cord lesion or injury.

  • Recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infections)

Based on the symptoms and results of the uroflowmetry, a treatment plan can be developed.
