Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive procedure, used to repair a hernia. A hernia occurs when a small portion of an organ including the intestines, protrudes causing an abnormal bulge in the abdomen area. A hernia repair is indicated if:

  • The hernia is causing pain and discomfort

  • It interferes with your normal routine activities.

  • It can grow in size

  • There is a risk of obstruction & strangulation of the intestine which then becomes an emergency.

The procedure can be planned in advance and at your convenience. You will be asked to stop blood thinners a week before your surgery. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Fluids and antibiotics are administered intravenously.  During the procedure, multiple smaller incisions are made near the affected area. The abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to create more working space.  A laparoscope and other instruments are inserted through the incisions to fix the hernia.  The herniated part of the organ is put back into its place and a mesh is used to patch the weaker spot. The abdomen is deflated and the incision is closed and dressed. The procedure can last for about an hour. Post-surgery, pain and discomfort in the abdomen are common. You may be given medicine for pain relief. Within few days, you will be able to return to your normal activity. Make sure to follow-up regularly to monitor the healing process.
