Laparoscopic colectomy and splenectomy

Laparoscopic Surgery

Colectomy is a procedure used to remove your colon / large intestine. There are several types of colectomy procedures including:

  • Total colectomy (entire colon is removed)

  • Partial colectomy (the colon is removed partially)

  • Hemicolectomy (left or the right portion of the colon is removed)

  • Proctocolectomy (colon and rectum are removed)

The indications of Colectomy are:

  • Ulcerative Colitis

  • Cronin’s disease

  • Diverticulitis

  • Multiple polyposis Cole (FAP)

  • Cancer of the Colon

  • Cancer of the Rectum

A splenectomy is a procedure used to remove the entire spleen. Spleen, which is a small organ located near the stomach, is an important part of our immune system. The types of splenectomy include:

  • Total splenectomy (the entire spleen is removed).

  • Partial splenectomy (a part of spleen is removed).

Removal of the spleen is indicated in case of:

  • A ruptured spleen due to injury

  • Accidents

  • Injury while playing sports

  • Cancer

  • Sickle cell disease

Laparoscopic splenectomy and colectomy are done after administering general anaesthesia.  Multiple incisions are made on the abdominal area and a laparoscope (A slender tube fitted with a light and camera) is inserted in one of the incisions to locate the colon and the spleen. The abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide to create more workspace. The colon and spleen are gently disconnected from surrounding structures and removed through one of the incisions. The abdomen is deflated and the incisions are closed and dressed. After surgery, your condition is closely monitored for any complications. It may take a week to recover completely.
