Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery in Delhi

Coronary heart disease or coronary artery disease is characterized by the build-up of a waxy substance called plaque inside the coronary arteries blocking the blood flow. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery/bypass surgery/heart bypass surgery is recommended in emergencies such as heart attack, to ease symptoms of coronary artery disease, including chest pain, breathlessness, etc.  This procedure uses a portion of a healthy blood vessel from your arm, leg, or chest to redirect blood flow around the blocked artery. Different types of CABG include:

  • Traditional Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: The heart is accessed by opening the chest bone and medicines are given to stop the heart temporarily to keep it still during the procedure. A heart-lung bypass machine is used to pump blood and oxygen to the body during surgery.  After the procedure, the heart usually starts to beat on its own but sometimes mild electric shocks are given to restart the heart.
  • Off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting/beating heart bypass grafting: This procedure is similar to the traditional CABG but the heart is not stopped, and the heart-lung bypass machine is not used.
  • Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: This procedure is similar to off-pump CABG, but multiple smaller incisions instead of single large incision is used to open the chest bone. This procedure is particularly used to treat the blocked artery in front of the heart. This procedure cannot be used to treat multiple blocked arteries.
