The mini-gastric bypass also called as one anastomosis gastric bypass. In this procedure is a combination of gastric sleeve and a standard gastric bypass. Indications for the procedure include:
BMI > 35 with or without obesity-associated health conditions (diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, etc.)
BMI 30 with obesity-associated health conditions
During the procedure, general anaesthesia is administered and multiple small incisions are made on your abdomen. Some small instruments and a laparoscope —- which is a thin tube fitted with a light and camera on the end — is inserted through these incisions to get a clear and magnified view of your stomach. The size of your upper stomach is reduced so that it looks like a narrow tube or sleeve and can hold only a limited amount of food. The opening of the stomach is then attached to the loop of the intestine, so that food can bypass the lower stomach, duodenum, and a portion of the small intestine (omega loop). The procedure can take about an hour. The incisions are closed and dressed.
The advantages of the procedure include:
The procedure is simple and is completed in a short time
Fully reversible procedure
Improvement in obesity-related comorbidities
Hunger pangs are reduced
You will feel full stomach even after having limited quantities of food
You may be advised to take multivitamins and mineral supplements life-long, to avoid the risk of malnutrition
