Types of Pancreatitis

There are two main types of pancreatitis: acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis.

  • Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can be managed initially with medications and observation.  that usually goes away on its own within a few days. Acute pancreatitis can be caused by gallstones, alcohol abuse, trauma to the abdomen, and certain medications.

  • Chronic pancreatitis is a long-term inflammation of the pancreas that can damage the pancreas and impair its function. Chronic pancreatitis is most commonly caused by alcohol abuse.

Symptoms of Pancreatitis 

The most common symptom of pancreatitis is severe pain in the upper abdomen. The pain may radiate to the back and maybe worse after eating. Other symptoms of pancreatitis may include:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fever

  • Rapid pulse

  • Swelling and tenderness in the abdomen.

  • Diarrhea

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fatty, oily stools

Pancreatitis Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Mild pancreatitis may be treated with rest, fluids, and pain medication. More severe pancreatitis may require hospitalization for intravenous (IV) fluids, pain medication, and antibiotics. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the gallbladder or to drain a pancreatic abscess.

Treatment for Mild Pancreatitis

  • Rest

The pancreas needs time to heal, so it is important to rest while you are recovering from pancreatitis. This means taking a proper diet as advised by your physician, strict abstinence from alcohol, avoiding strenuous activity etc. and eating small, frequent meals. 

  • Fluids

Fluids help to prevent dehydration, which can make pancreatitis worse. You may drink clear fluids, such as water, broth, and clear juices. If you are unable to drink enough fluids, you may need to receive IV fluids.

  • Pain Medication

Avoid taking Over-the-counter medications, Over-the-counter pain medications without consulting your physician, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, may be helpful for mild pain. If your pain is severe, your doctor may prescribe stronger pain medication.
